Historic Regattas 2009
Most Venetian public celebrations will take place, at least in part, on the water. Many public feasts are a celebration of the relationship between the city and the sea.
We will usually paddle along and watch the spectacle from our kayaks.
The Sensa Feast
The Sensa Feast is a celebration of the marriage of Venice to the sea. The central part of the feast is a boat procession from St. Mark to San Nicolò on the Lido, where a golden ring is tossed in the water as a sign of the marriage.
Mestre Regatta
A race for six-oar open boats.
Sant’Erasmo Regatta
A race for two-oar pupparini and mascarete boats, women only. The race takes place in the canals around the Sant’Erasmo island north of Venice.
SS. Giovanni e Paolo
A race for two-oar pupparini and one-oar gondole, from Murano to Ponte dei Mendicanti.
Murano Regatta
A race for one-oar pupparini and gondole, for both men and women, in the waters around and canals of Murano.
Malamocco Regatta
A race for two-oar mascarete and six-oar caorline.
Redentore Regatta
A spectacular race during the Festa del Redentore (Feast for Christ the Redeemer) for two-oar pupparini and two-oar gondole along the Giudecca side of the Canal Giudecca with start and end in front of the Redentore church.
Pallestrina Regatta
A race for two-oar pupparine and two-oar mascarete, held on the lagoon side of the Pallestrina island south of the Lido.
Historical Regatta
Before the race a pageant traditional boats with rowers in historical attire moves down the Canal Grande. Competitions for two-oar pupparini, two-oar mascarete, two-oar gondolini and six-oar caorline.
Burano Regatta
A race for two-oar pupparini, two-oar mascarete and two-oar gondole held around the island of Burano north of Venice.
Other regattas and competitions
There are numerous other boating competitions throughout the season, both rowing and sailing.
